ABOUT ABOUT

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Celebrate the reason for the season with A Cathedral Christmas— a concert of sacred Christmas music that tells the story of Christmas. Musicians from our community will come together to form a socially-distant ensemble for the performance. The concert is offered as a gift to the community of Corpus Christi and is bound to help put you in the Christmas spirit.

"The program is a reimagining of the classic lessons and carols format," says Alex Oldroyd, Director of Music at Corpus Christi Cathedral. "We'll have some traditional readings and familiar carols that everyone knows and loves. There are also some less well-known works that I think will stick in people's minds both for the beauty of their music as well as their texts. In particular, a piece titled 'The Dream Isaiah Saw' has a hauntingly-beautiful melody and a powerful message of unity that is very timely."

Several excerpts from the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah, which draws its text directly from scripture, will frame the program and act as musical "lessons."

"Christmas is one of the best times of year to perform music with so much good repertoire to choose from," says Dr. Meaghan King, Artistic Director of the Concert Series. "The carol arrangements will range from whisper-quiet to quite literally pulling out all the stops. This mirrors the whole drama of Christmas: scripture says the whole host of heaven cried out with joy at Christ's birth, but he was also a newborn infant, quiet and peaceful."

A free-will offering to support the Concert Series will be taken at the concert. Donations may also be made online by following the link from the Concert Series or Cathedral web sites.
